💛Toddler Wash Day With Robyn & Nana: Gentle Care for Type 4 Hair 🫶🏽

By Inspired by Bea🫶🏽

Wash day with a toddler is always an adventure — full of giggles, wiggles, and sometimes a few “Nana, I’m tired!” moments. But with the right products, patience, and lots of love, wash day becomes a beautiful bonding ritual. Today, I’m sharing how wash day goes with my granddaughter, little Miss Robyn. She has soft and springy Type 4 curls. Her hair is thick and dense, as well as being of low porosity. It is also grazing waist length.

Whether you’re caring for your daughter, granddaughter, niece, or a little princess at home, this gentle routine will help you keep her curls moisturized, detangled, and flourishing.

Understanding Your Toddler’s Type 4 Hair Type 4 hair is naturally coily, dense, and tightly curled. It dries out faster than other hair types and thrives on moisture. Toddlers with Type 4 textures often need: – A gentle wash routine – Lots of slip when detangling – Protective styles that don’t pull their delicate strands – Products free from harsh ingredients.

Robyn’s curls are a beautiful mix of fluffy coils and tiny spirals, and with consistency, her hair stays soft, healthy, and protected.

Step-by-Step: Robyn & Nana’s Toddler Wash Day Routine

1. Start with steam to open up cuticles while finger detangling with Jamaican Black Castor Oil. The steam opens up the cuticles to be able to receive moisture, and the Jamaican Black Castor Oil serves as a pre poo. This softens tangles, adds slip, reduces breakage, and makes detangling easier. I work my magic while she plays on her phone.

2. Gentle Shampoo Time Use a tear-free, moisturizing shampoo. Focus on massaging her scalp gently while keeping her relaxed and entertained. The less scrubbing, the better for her natural oils.

3. Condition & Finger Detangle Apply a rich conditioner with lots of slip and work in sections. I use my fingers to detangle, but a wide-tooth comb will also work. Always start from the ends and work your way up. Praise your little one to keep the moment positive and calm.

4. Rinse & Lock In Moisture After rinsing, use a leave-in conditioner to seal moisture back into her curls. The LCO method (Leave-in, Cream, Oil) works well for Robyn and other toddlers with Type 4 hair.

5. I blow-dried her hair. I use the Red Kiss blow dryer with the comb attachment on medium heat and high setting.

6. Simple Protective Style Keep toddler styles soft and tension-free: two puffballs, loose twists, soft ponytails, or gentle braids. The goal is protection, not perfection.

7. Satin Time Make sure she sleeps on a satin pillowcase or wears a satin bonnet (if she keeps it on!). This helps reduce tangles and dryness overnight.

Wash day doesn’t have to be a struggle — in fact, it can become a memory-making ritual. I love being able to do her hair. We talk and laugh, and I really enjoy every minute I spend with her. Having grandchildren is such a blessing. With patience, love, and the right routine, your toddler’s curls will flourish beautifully.💛
